My blog got me out of jury duty...

...or so, I like to think it did. Somehow they found me. About a month ago, NY State snail mailed me a summons to appear in court for jury duty selection. Cue the eye-roll and shit response - despite the fact that I don't have a NY driver's license and that I'm still registered to vote in NC, they felt that seven years in the city makes me a New Yorker. Yes, I guess that's a bit true.

So on Monday, I made the trek down to Centre Street, not sure what to really expect. The DMV, hospitals and courthouses have a funny way of bringing all types together. All creatures great and small. You have the bankers in their suit and ties, the mothers excited for a few hours away from the kids, the emigrants who can barely speak the English language, the almost homeless looking folks, the actor types and the women who wear makeup with their perfect hair with their LuLuLemon attire and stare down at their smartphones planning their next ladies who lunch gathering. Then there are those like me - the young professionals - excited have a few days off of work in order to catch up on a few episodes of Girls and Breaking Bad.

On the first day, we were cattle called into a giant courtroom. As they announced the names of jurors, each one walked reluctantly to the stand for the interview process. I crossed my fingers as each name was read that wasn't mine. And then they called me. Crap. Juror number 11.

The interview process was a lot longer than I thought it would be. We were grilled about our careers, our partners, our neighborhoods, our relationships with lawyers and cops and whether we had been a victim of crime. Now here is where it gets crazy. I would say that 75% of the jurors indicated they had been robbed in the city (either at gunpoint, knife or by breaking and entering). You can only imagine my poker face (or lack thereof) at the sound of these stories. Naive me has never once felt unsafe or has been privy to anything even remotely close to some of these jurors. Then there was the guy who told us his sister-in-law was murdered by a hit-man paid for by her own husband. WTF? People. Are. Crazy. I was also intrigued by the jobs of some of these folks. There was the Italian shoe designer, the NYT writer, the Barney's buyer, the Southern guy whose father has a boat in Oriental NC, the lawyer, the college football coach, etc. On the first day, I was not selected to be a juror. I was quite surprised because my story was not nearly as exciting as those who went before me.

The jury selection for the day two trial of the Sopranos-like men (guess I had preconceived notions about them, so it's a good thing I wasn't picked) was a bit longer. I wasn't called for jury questioning the first round. Therefore, I was pretty sure I was going to be picked the second and maybe even selected to be a juror. The judge informed us that the trial would likely go until the end of next week. Long time. Okay. I needed to get strategic here in my responses.

The one question that was different in day two's interview process was "what do you do in your spare time?" What do I do in  my spare time? Well, I noticed that NYT reporter did not get selected when she noted she was a writer. So, when the judge asked me what I did in my spare time, I quickly responded, "Well, I blog." Most everyone else said "I drink wine, I read." I glanced over and saw the lawyers taking notes.

After each jury member finished answering, the assistant DA jumped up and his first follow up question was directed at me.

DA: Ma'am, you said you blog, is that right?
Me: Yes sir.
DA: What do you blog about?
Me: My life. Anything and everything. The good - the bad. My kitchen chairs, my commute, my dog, you know, what I do on a day to day basis. As boring or as exciting as it is.
DA: Interesting.
Me: Thanks! (big smile)

Excused. BOOM.

Thanks, blog.

A snapshot of snapshots

A person's camera phone can tell a lot about them. Or, at least what they have been up to. Here's a snapshot of my snapshots.

Just last weekend, I flew down to NC. My grandfather has not been doing well, so I flew down to get some family time in. While there, of course I ordered my favorite southern drink (sweet tea with crushed iced). Why can't you find crushed iced north of the Mason Dixon? I have no idea.
My brother is raising chickens because he's preppy-hipster like that. Currently, they are residing in his dining room while he builds a chicken coup for them outside. Their names are Little Carson, Edyth and O'Brien. Name that show.
My dad purchased this new piece of artwork for my mom for Christmas. It's huge and I love it - the colors especially. I took a photo to save as inspiration for more of my painting therapy.
And here's a photo of my Dad and brother. I always forget to take photos with my Dad for the blog, so here it is. I think it's a good one. Love them both so.
While in Raleigh I bought these cute flats. I wore them yesterday and today my feet hurt like hell. Beauty is pain, y'all.
Reagan is our family dog. Always the backseat companion with me when I'm home. Always smiling that one. Bailey missed her cousin while I was away. (seen here hiding her face)
And finally, I just bought this cabinet from Crate & Barrel. I needed something for the space beside my fireplace and this was the winner. I'll post more photos of the room soon. Surprise surprise, I changed the living room around again. I guess when you live in a small space, you can get antsy with the layout.

What have y'all been up to lately?

Rainy Days

The rain is tap dancing on the street of the city today. It's a hard and steady tap. As the cabs drive by the tap dancing turns into the waltz, swirling around until the water hits the pavement. Quiet. Tap tap tap. Quiet.

I'm anxiously awaiting spring, but trying to enjoy the rain today. I saw these images on Pinterest and they capture a quiet, comfortable and happy rainy day in my mind.

Quick Chair Update

This past summer I ordered these chairs online. I loved the shape and the size and they came fully assembled so even better. Then, I got them in the mail and didn't love them. But, the quality was good so I thought I would work with them.

I went to my favorite fabric store here in the city (Mood) and found this small ikat dot fabric in lime green. It goes great with my curtains and pillows, so I thought it could add some fun color to the otherwise drab chairs. I also bought some white paint thinking that I would actually take the time to sand these guys down and paint them, but that didn't happen. The paint is still in my closet staring at me everytime I open it. Baby steps right?
Of course I somehow managed to break the first staple gun I bought (so me), so last week I went down to Home Depot and bought a new one with new staples. I then poured myself a big glass of wine and began the recovering.
Here's the "almost" after. I still think the chairs need a fresh coat of white paint to liven them up but I really love the fabric. Also, the green looks a little more limey/yellow in these photos. It's not that bright in real life.

Hopefully it won't take me as long to paint these as it did to recover them. Have y'all done any DIY projects lately?

The Weekend Wrap up

One of my favorite things about living in New York is having friends come visit. 1) because I love my friends and 2) they make me get out and do stuff that I typically wouldn't do because as New Yorkers we can get lazy sometimes.

This past weekend, one of my very best friends, Allie visited. Her sweet husband flew her up as a Valentine's Day gift. My husband was out of town for work, so we were both excited to have a girls weekend. We instagrammed A LOT.

We sipped margaritas at lunch, walked through Chelsea Market and up the Highline, shopped at Fish Eddys (my fav), ABC furniture, C. Wonder (Allie's fav), Jonathan Adler and Lillian August. Also, we ate. And ate a lot we did. Our friend Lauren was in town for work on Friday (double win for me), so we pretended we were trendy and had seafood at Catch in the meatpacking on Friday and brunched at Jacob's Pickles and Peels on Saturday. Saturday night the snow began to fall and Allie and I hailed a cab to LES for drinks with an old sorority sister. We ended the night at Milon Indian, which was wild. Have y'all been there?
I'm grateful for friends - especially friends who make me laugh, smile, think and love. Here are some favorite things from the weekend...
