The Good Ol' Girls

If any of you in New York are looking for something fun and cheap to do with your girlfriends, then I have the perfect thing for you -The Good Ol' Girls.

This past weekend, Southern in the City ventured out in the much cooler weather, to an off-Broadway show called, The Good Ol' Girls. The musical set in NC, consists of various monologues written by Southern authors including Lee Smith and has some of the best music consisting of country and rock. My mom told me about the show, which stars another Southerner from Raleigh, Lauren Kennedy. And, you don't have to be from the South to appreciate the show. My girlfriend from Boston enjoyed it just as much as my girlfriend from Richmond and I did.

And, the best part - it's only $35! Check out the site to learn more and purchase tickets. I promise you'll love it! But it only runs until April 11th so hurry!

Lilly Loving

I love a good lookin' prep. Boat shoes, croakies and of course Lilly Pulitzer. In college, every Southern girl (and some Yankee ones too) wore Lilly sundresses to football tailgates and trips to Fox Fields at UVA. My roommate freshman year even had a Lilly trashcan. I remember feeling guilty throwing trash in it. It was all the rage at only $65.

As I've gotten older, I haven't had much Lilly in my closet. Maybe it's because every other person in New York wears black, or so I thought until last night.

A friend of mine is a member of the New York Junior League and invited us to a private Lilly Pulitzer Party/Fundraiser at the Madison Ave store. Free wine was promised. If you were ever wondering where all the preppy girls were in NY, well, they were at the Lilly store last night. Every single one of them. I've never seen so many blonde-hair beauties in pearls sipping on wine. Wait, yes I have - my sorority. I imagined The Husband, my dad and brother in the middle of it all. I laughed out loud at this thought.

We loved combing through the cute pink and green dresses, bathing suits and totes. I didn't realize how many different products Lilly makes. Check out the jeep and my friend Sarah with the windmill.
I loved the wall art and thought it would be fun to recreate I can only image what The Husband would do if I came home with these outfits and told him that I can't wait to dress our family in matching clothes. I think he would LOVE that. Thanks for a fun night, Emily! For more information on upcoming Junior League events in the city, click here.

She's a Rich Girl...

It's no secret that I'm a huge Hall & Oates fan. I've been to four concerts at Beacon Theater, have most of their songs on my iPod and even bought a signed album a few years ago on Ebay. I know they were most popular in the 70's, a time when I was just a twinkle in God's eye, but to me they are one of the best bands ever. There I said it. Ever. And, who couldn't resist their good looks? Okay, maybe they should just stick to singing. When I got home from work today, The Husband had DVRed the Ellen DeGeneres Show for me because of the musical guest...the Bird and the Bee. This band from LA created a tribute album to no other than (yup, you guessed it) Daryl Hall and John Oates. Needless to say, I was so excited to hear it. While they aren't the original pop duo, they do add their own special touch to the classic songs that I love so much. Have a listen:

UPDATE: After seeing this post, my lovely friend Elizabeth sent me a great YouTube clip (thanks, liz!) of an awesome recording session at Daryl's house. He gives some background on how he came up with the sounds of "No Can Do" and sings a cool version of the song. If you're a fan, and even if you aren't, you will like this clip:

It finally feels like spring in NY, ya'll. Today it's going to be a balmy 73 degrees. Al Roker said it's going to be warmer in NY than Miami this weekend. Um, really? I have to admit though, New Yorkers are going a little crazy and have already pulled out the sundresses and flip flops. I haven't reached that point yet but can feel it coming.

In other news, I'm flying down south to Raleigh tonight! Looking forward to seeing the family and friends and getting a little R&R. And, it's going to be even warmer than here so I can't complain.

Oh, and did anyone watch the Wake Forest game last night? Go Deacs! I don't usually say this, but since the Tarheels aren't even in the conference this year (and most of my family went to WFU), I will today. If only I had made a bracket...
Have a great weekend everyone!

Green is my Favorite Color

I love the color green. It's fresh, clean and reminds me of the spring time. I love green so much that I even dyed my wedding shoes this color.
In the spirit of St. Patrick's Day, The Husband made me Green Eggs & Ham last night. (I would not eat them with a fox. I would not eat them in a box. I would not eat them here or there. I would not eat them anywhere). Name that book.

Every year, I get so excited to wear green and see everyone with their festive decor. But I don't think NY got the memo, or at least not at my office. I am literally the only person at work wearing something green. Bring out the pinchers, ya'll. I thought this Yankee town was full of Irish blood?

Maybe it's the McCormick name in me that always gets so excited about St. Patty's Day. When I was little, my mom, er the Leprechaun, turned our orange juice and milk green. To me, this was the coolest thing in the world.

I even thought about bringing some green food coloring to work this morning and dripping a few drops in the communal milk and orange juice containers in the kitchen. But, given the lack of green attire and festivity in the office, I'm glad that I didn't do that. I don't want to be known as the girl that made things green.

But, isn't it a great color?

Happy St. Patty's Day!

Sink Skirt Storage

I've always loved home decorating, HGTV and reading interior design magazines. But the funny thing is, when it comes to my own place, the process seems rather daunting to me. Every night after I get back from work I think, "Hey, I'll do this...I'll do that." Then, American Idol (or some other show) steals my attention and I put off hanging a photo or organizing a drawer for the next day...or the next.

We've now been in our new place for two weeks and most of the decorating is done. We haven't had a full weekend in it yet so I'm really looking forward to rolling up the sleeves and finally finishing the unpacking this weekend. The Husband has even promised me a trip to IKEA.

As much as I love our new place, the storage really sucks. I mean sucks. There is hardly any, especially the bathroom. Our pedestal sink makes me laugh. It's so small. Just to give you an idea, the airplane sink I used on my way to San Diego was roughly the same size. It's okay, you can laugh now too.

Therefore, I thought I'd attempt to create a pedestal sink skirt so could hid a few things underneath. Let me preface this by saying that I don't know how to sew. I can barely sew on a button (my Grandmother is probably gasping right now). I just never learned and honestly never really needed to.

So here we go...what does one girl do with no storage, a small sink and no knowledge of how to sew. Easy. Buy iron-on hem tape. So I did, along with some Velcro. And...voila, I made a sink skirt.

So here is the sink before...see it's small:And here is the after:

Sun, Sand and SeaWorld

I know. It's been a long time since my last post. Sorry about that, ya'll. Southern in the City and The Husband took a mini-vacation out west to San Diego. It was great to get some sun on these pale New York City faces. We were also able to see some of the family, eat lots of fish tacos and even feed whales, walruses and pet a few penguins at SeaWorld (via employee access thanks to Uncle K).

We didn't get home until 2:45 a.m. this morning so my brain is a little fuzzy today, but it was well worth it for a little R&R amongst the palm trees and water. Since I'm too tired to write, here are a few shots from our trip...and for everyone who keeps asking, apartment pics are coming soon!

In Like A Lion, Out Like a Lamb

When I was little, one of my favorite things about school was the large calendar in the front of the classroom. While I can't remember the specific elementary teacher or class, I do recall how much I loved the pictures that corresponded with each month.

My favorite calendar picture was for the month of March with the lion and the lamb. "In like a lion, out like a lamb." I love this saying, not only because it summarizes March so well (at least down south) but also because it's so optimistic.

I'm so tired of this winter, which for many of us has been one of the coldest to-date. While today is a chilly 40 degrees, I'm hopeful of the lamb and that spring will be here by the 31st...probably more like May 31st in NYC, but I digress. Spring is coming. Are you ready?
