Moving Day

It's finally here - the big moving day. The Husband and Southern in the City packed all night and even early this morning, throwing the last bit of our treasures into any size box we could find. We're done. My closet is empty and the movers are packing-up and shipping-out as I type this very post.

However, let me ask you. How, in only one year, do you accumulate so much "stuff"? Oh, yes. We got married. I forgot.

"What purpose does that serve?" said The Husband to the curtains hanging in the window. "Can't we just throw them out and not have curtains in the new place?" (yeah right!) "They make the room. They are pretty and they make me happy!" I stated, er, declared. End of story.

But, to show The Husband that I wasn't the crazy lady on the show, "Hoarders" I did in fact manage to throw out old shoes, bags and thing-a-my-jigs. Despite my "you never know when you'll need this one-day" mantra, I think I did a pretty good job.

So here's a few shots of our "stuff" before I left for work this morning...more to follow in the new place.

Upper West Sidahs

Upper West Sidahs (I like to say it in my best Yankee accent). That's what we'll be. So very soon; seven days to be exact. Oh, I guess that means that I have seven days to pack. I better get on that.

The Husband and Southern in the City finally found the new home. We looked at many apartments, good and bad, and finally found the one that suits us best. And, my commute will only be 15-20 minutes. See ya later one hour subway ride...

On Valentines Day, we decided to take a walk over to our new neighborhood for a little meet-and-greet. We love the neighborhood and all the cute restaurants, stores and parks...dog parks to be exact.

Here's a few things I'm looking forward to:

1. Shake Shack - The best hamburgers in NYC, hands down. I've tried many a burger here in the city and the gold medal goes to this fine establishment. We're not too far from this one, located at 77th and Columbus.
2. Dog Park by The Museum of Natural History - After grabbing a burger at Shake Shack, one of my favorite things to do is walk over to the dog park and get my dog fix for the day. It's a great space for medium to large dogs.

3. Green Flea Market - After you eat your Shake Shack burger and watch the dogs run and play, walk over to the Green Flea Market for some shopping. They have some real treasures here and even deliver all over the city. In fact, we bought our bedroom dresser here just last summer. Open Sunday only. 4. Cafe Lalo - I haven't been here yet, but we walked past it on Sunday. This cafe was packed full of people and looked like a great place to eat brunch. For those who like the movie, "You've Got Mail" (like my mother), this is where they filmed the first meeting scene. So there are just a few of the many things that I'm looking forward to living on the UWS.

Pictures of the apartment coming soon. But, if you're curious, click here. Warning: the music is a bit obnoxious.

Southern in the City Featured Online

Yes. You read the title right. I was featured online. Well, not here, but actually on a real live Web site. And by featured, I mean my body (wait, dress) was pictured, sans the head. But hey, I'll take it!

If you didn't know, I'm kinda obsessed with my wedding photographers, Joey and Jess. They are awesome and as our one year (oh my goodness we made it!) anniversary approaches, I secretly wish I could fly them up here and have them capture us in NY. I've already been practicing my posing. A girl can dream right?

Anyway, if you can bear the boasting a little longer - wait, lets be honest, I think my mom, dad and mother-in-law are the only ones who really care - take a look at mywedding.com Charleston. I'm the one holding the cute green shoes below:

Snow Day in the City??!?!

Here we go...
According to Mr. Weatherman, NY is supposed to get 12-15 inches starting this evening on through tomorrow. They have already cancelled the public schools and I'm just waiting for them to say, "Don't come to work tomorrow!" So far I hear crickets, but the water cooler goosip (excuse my lame office lingo), is that we may be able to work from home tomorrow.
In my almost four years here, we have NEVER had a snow day. You know it's going to be bad when New Yorkers start acting like Southerners and cancel school before a snowflake even falls.

In preparation, I think I'll bring home the work laptop tonight...just to be safe:)

Pottery Barn Says it's Spring

Many of us east coasters will be geting some winter weather this weekend, especially D.C. (Oh, I feel for yall!). I would be happy if I never saw snow until 2011 as I'm sure many of you would be too.

Today on this gloomy grey winter day, I decided to take a stroll through the Pottery Barn across from my office. It was magical. I felt like a little girl walking through a garden on a spring day. Pottery Barn's displays of fresh (fake) flowers, birds, bunnies and Easter eggs were the sun-shine to my cloudy day. Pastels, pastels, pastels!! Oh, you men wouldn't understand.

So as we watch the snow come down this weekend (yet again) and feel the chilly 30 degree winds blow against our faces, fear not my friends because Pottery Barn says spring is near!
Come Spring, everything will be so fresh and so clean clean...(name that band, er, rapper).

Here are some of my favorites from my Pottery Barn prowl today.

Some Subway Entertainment

As much as I loathe the subway, it's not always so bad. Case in point, Monday afternoon. I ran into this little a cappella group (plus string bass) in the 5th avenue subway. I've seen them before, but luckily this time I had my camera with me.

Seeing talented artists in the New York City subway is always refreshing in the midst of the hustle and bustle of commuters and such (e.g., smelly homeless men).

They may not be the UNC Clef Hangers, but they're not bad. Check out their little ditty "Gloria", below:

Where's the Oven?

Well friends, the apartment search continues. Southern in the City braved the cold this past Saturday to find the perfect new home on the West Side. We didn't find "the one" just yet, but we're getting closer - we're warm, but not hot.

Apartments in NY rent fast. I mean before you can even say, "How much?", it's likely already taken. Even the bad ones. And boy, have we seen some bad ones. Exhibit A pictured below. At first glance, you might think what a nice wet bar this is. Look again. This is the kitchen. The whole kitchen. The kitchen that was located in the middle of the living room. I'm not lying. I mean the Embassy Suites has a bigger kitchen than this. If you're wondering where the oven is, well there isn't one. The thing that looks like a microwave is indeed the microwave but it also serves as the oven. Talk about multi-tasking. And, take a look at the stove. There are only two burners. Now, why not add in two more burners? And, to top it off, the refrigerator was located on the complete opposite side of the living room. Weird.
But alas, it wasn't all bad. We did see this beautiful apartment below, which even had a dining room (oh, the little things in life). For those not up-to-date with Manhattan real estate, you never hear of a separate dining room. NEVER. It also had a foyer and a living room large enough for me to twirl around in with my hands in the air saying, "It feels like home!" The poor Husband had to kindly pull me back into reality when we learned the price was not in our budget. He has a hard job taking care of me sometimes. I know we'll find home-sweet-home soon. It may take a few days longer but I know something will surface, sooner rather than later I hope. But until then, I'll just go back to daydreaming about the large dining room and high ceilings...
